Adams Group Builders Presents Personality And Style In Custom Home Building

Most potential home buyers employ tricks to remember each of the different houses they inspect while shopping the market. One might be the ‘large brick with the red door,’ or the one with the ‘layered pool deck and nice water feature,’ or the ‘big Tudor with the long stone walkway.’ But when a house is given a nickname, says Cathy Adams of The Adams Group Builders, she knows its true personality has been revealed.

“It was fantastic,” recalls Adams of the time a client nicknamed one of her homes as the “SoHo” house. “The reclaimed brick walls, arched windows painted black and a wood ceiling in the glass solarium reminded our client so much of a loft in SoHo in Greenwich Village that they called it the ‘SoHo’ house.” The event reinforced for the homebuilder that her attention to detail and developing of a home’s uniqueness had paid off. “If someone can put a name to it, then you know a house has a personality and expresses itself to people when they come inside,” she said. “And, that is what gives them a good feeling inside.”

Cathy Adams, together with her partner and husband, Richard Adams, has run The Adams Group Builders, Inc. (known previously as Adams Custom Homes) for 20 years in the North Atlanta area. Her inspiration for the “SoHo” house, as well as all her homes, began with a visit to the local antique store to rummage through old architectural books. “I have lots of books and reference them to find ideas and design elements that I share with the architects. Every home is a special place. I usually discover one unique element that serves as the foundation for the home’s design.”

Adams is also known for her “surprises” or special features she incorporates into each room. “Every room needs to have something that’s one of a kind,” explains Adams. For instance, Adams says that secondary rooms such as children’s bedrooms frequently lack uniqueness. “I like to do something special in the child’s room, like a step down or a window seat, port window or niche bookcase.” With over 40 years combined experience in the luxury home building industry, the Adams team is successful because of their complementing qualities and skills.

“Richard has the technical and analytical skills, and I love the creative process and interior design,” says Adams. Along with a group of seasoned subcontractors and architects, the couple creates timeless, quality homes. “Many of our subcontractors have worked with us for 25 years,” said Adams. “They know our expectations for quality and they deliver each and every time.”

The Adams have designed and built homes (custom and specs) in some of north Atlanta’s most prestigious communities including Six Hills at Crabapple, North Valley, Laurel Springs, Windward, Country Club of the South, St. Ives, White Columns, Ardsley Park at The Golf Club of Georgia, Sentinel Ferry, Sentinel on the River and currently at The River Club in Suwanee.

“We really take the care to work with our clients to help them understand the process of building a home – from site selection and floor plan development, to important interior finishes,” explains Adams. “We work with them from the beginning and throughout the planning process so that by the time we start building, our expectations are running parallel with theirs.”

It is a smart strategy to bring the builder into the process early, advises Adams, to help keep the project and the budget in line. “Even when you are spending millions of dollars, there is always a limit,” she explains. “If you engage your builder early there is less chance of suffering any disappointment when a home design is out of line with the budget. We can help eliminate this worry.”

This close-knit, client-builder relationship heightens the client’s experience and offers a synergy that results in long-term relationships that last long after the house is completed. “We truly respect the confidence that our clients place in us and realize that the decision to put their trust in us affects their quality of life in a very real way,” states Adams. “Their home is the place that they raise their family and enjoy their life. That is important to us.”

“We have remained friends with many of our clients,” adds Adams. “It’s a nice byproduct of our business.”

Future plans include the company’s expansion into the Highlands, N.C. market. “We have had a vacation home in this community for six years and have been visitors there for years,” explains Adams. “Highlands is growing into a fulltime resident community and many people are building second homes there because of its close proximity to Atlanta.” The Adams Group Builders, Inc. is currently involved in the Sequoah Woods project in Highlands, a new neighborhood with 13 one-acre lots within the city limits. “It’s a real jewel, and we’re excited about becoming part of the community there.”
